‘They’re not, especially Betsy. She’s in a right state. Neither can understand why Matty believed that his kit was in a cupboard. They’re coming soon with Rowley and Cyril.’
‘Dr Drake wants to take him to your empty place next to Sophia’s residence in Barns Wood. It’s all on one level, and when he recovers it will be easier and safer for him to move about. Is that all right?’ asked Charlie.
Badger nodded to Dr Drake and a group of animals lifted the stretcher to begin their slow journey to Barns Wood.

Sophia, the fairy queen, Lincoln Rabbit, the woodland gnomes and the fairies who lived in Barns Wood had been waiting anxiously in the enchanted garden for Matty to arrive. The stretcher bearers lowered the hedgehog beside Badger’s woodland home. Matty was barely conscious as the gnomes dragged the stretcher inside and placed him on Badger’s bed. They covered him with a duvet and left him with Dr Drake and Sophia.
At home, in the wildlife garden, Betsy and Sam had packed a bag of clean clothes for their son and started out across the meadow with their friends. Edward Badger was waiting on the bridge and Betsy wanted to know where her son was. The badger spoke gently.
‘Matty is in Badger’s house. I’m afraid your boy is badly injured. It was Paris’s quick thinking that probably saved his life. She did a great job holding on to Matty while she waited for help to arrive. And so many animals helped from around the valley.’
‘We shall have to thank them, Sam,’ said Betsy.
