Matty Hedgehog and the Paper Chase
Later that day, one of her guests mentioned that a baker, who had lost his home and business in the floods, was looking for work. Dolly started to think and being a canny business animal, wrote to Charlie Rabbit to ask if Betsy would like some help in the bakery. She told him about Gilmore Duck and his wife, Saskia. After he opened her telegram, Charlie raced across the garden and shouted for Alfie and Sadie Squirrel.
‘Come down here!’ he said, grinning. ‘Dolly’s heard of someone who could help in the bakery – Gilmore Duck. He’s married to Saskia, and I know where we can find her.’
Sadie smiled. ‘Oh, Charlie, that’s wonderful news. Does Dolly mention their youngsters? How is Saskia?’
‘They’re all well. Her husband, Gilmore, is a baker and he’s looking for temporary work. Dolly wondered if he could be of any help. Do you think we should tell Sam or wait a few days more?’
Alfie looked worried. ‘Sophia is waking Matty tomorrow: he’s been asleep for four days. Sam hasn’t left his side and we hope Betsy will be there to see him wake up. It’s a harrowing time for them, but I think if someone can take the pressure of the bakery business away from her she will be able to care for Matty.
‘Why don’t we invite Saskia and her family here ‒ to the garden? They can stay in the old duck house. I’ll mention it to Sam when I next visit.’

On a bright afternoon, Sophia was excited as she greeted Sam, Betsy and Archie at the front door to Badger’s place.
