He believed that Matty needed a firm hand and a positive attitude if he was going to get better. Betsy had been with him for three weeks, on and off, and had insisted he remained on the bed with his books and school work. His wife needed a distraction, so he went to visit Doctor Drake on the other side of Barns Wood to seek his advice.
‘I wouldn’t dare tell your wife what she should do, Sam. However, Badger has been very kind to you and would feel hurt to hear her comments. He refers to his second home as shabby chic. However, I agree that Matty needs independence and should be active. Now, what are you going to say to her?’
