Emma Weston lifted the hatch on top of the chicken coop. She was disappointed when she didn’t find any eggs and went back indoors.
‘No eggs, Mum. That’s almost three weeks that we have been waiting.’
‘According to my poultry book, they often take time off from laying. We will have to be patient, Emma. Give them time to settle into their new surroundings,’ said her mum.
‘I suppose so,’ said Emma. ‘Why did you get six of the same kind? And why are they so fat?’ she asked.
‘Mr Hayward, in the village, suggested Buff Orpingtons because of their good temperament. I did intend to get a mixture but the book said that buffs are reliable egg layers
