they had lived in an orchard with the flock. She was nothing short of a bully, especially to younger chickens. Now, they were shut in a pen with her day and night. Minnie was desperate to escape. She had tried to make friends with a rabbit and a squirrel in the garden, but Adeline had interfered and told her to go inside. The other chickens felt the same as Minnie. They all missed the orchard they’d been snatched from.
They had been taken from the orchard at night. Minnie had been fast asleep in a chicken coop, one of several in the orchard. Suddenly, the hatch opened and she felt strong hands grab her sides. She’d tried to use her claws to defend herself, but she was put in a sack and tossed up and down before she felt herself be put down. She couldn’t see anything, but could hear other hens nearby. They called to each other for comfort and it was then that she heard Adeline’s dreaded cackling voice.
It was a long time before the sacks were removed and the chickens were exposed to daylight. Minnie looked around, blinking, and found they were in a slatted container with barely room to move. She had peered through a gap but all that she could see was legs and boots moving back and forth, and hear the sound of human voices shouting and talking.
Suddenly, the container rose from the ground and swerved through more legs and boots before it was put down with a bang and darkness surrounded them. A terrifying roaring and rumbling sound started beneath them, and Adeline freaked out until the noise stopped and their container shuddered. Light streamed through the gaps and
