Matty Hedgehog and the Paper Chase 57
Saskia Duck appeared through a line of billowing washing and hugged Charlie. ‘How good to see you, old friend. Come inside and meet the family.’
The rabbit was met with more hugs and handshakes and liked Gilmore instantly. He also met Gilmore’s elderly parents and listened as they told him about the floods. Saskia’s youngsters, Ava and Jack, were eager to know about Archie Hedgehog and their old friends whom they had left in the garden. Saskia didn’t know that Lottie had died and was sad when Charlie told her. He explained what had happened to Matty Hedgehog and wondered if they would consider visiting the garden.
They jumped at the chance and Gilmore said that he looked forward to meeting Saskia’s old friends as soon as possible. When it was time to leave, Gilmore and Leo walked back with Charlie to wait for Willow. He was punctual.
‘I’ll see you soon,’ Charlie said, as he climbed onto Willow’s back. He felt very happy with the way his visit had gone, and couldn’t wait to get home. ‘Tell Saskia the duck house is ready for you. Bye Leo!’
The ducks waited for Charlie to take flight and waved him off.
‘Dad, when I was little and broke my wing, I sat on Yappy Pigeon’s back and we flew over Barns Wood to see a doctor. It was wild!’ said Leo.
‘Yes, I imagine it would have been, son,’ said Gilmore proudly, smiling at his adopted youngster. ‘Are you looking forward to seeing your friends in the wildlife garden?’
