months, Fred and Albert Rabbit sailed two barges along the river from coast to coast. They moored in the same places every time to off-load and set up their fair. The barges were loaded with goodies for younger animals who had been saving their pocket money for weeks. In the autumn, Fred looked forward to stopping at Barns Wood to buy the metal and wooden items Alfie Squirrel and Sam Hedgehog made.
This year, though, Sam had very little to sell. He’d been preoccupied with the bakery business and now his time was taken up with Matty’s welfare. The lad was using his crutches and hobbling around Badger’s woodland home. Although they visited every day, his parents had returned home and Badger had been his night carer ever since.
