Matty Hedgehog and the Paper Chase 83
The herons swooped low over the farm and the animals waved as they passed. Sam dropped brightly coloured streamers into the crowd as the birds circled away.
‘What was that all about?’ asked Matty, gazing after them. After a few minutes, he called: ‘Hey! Look out! They’re coming back.’
This time, Serenity was in front and Sam was holding a long streamer that waved over his shoulder. Willow made a grab for the other end with his beak and pulled it to reveal a message:
*MATTY – LOOK IN THE BARN*
The hedgehog squinted to read the words and murmured, ‘... in the barn.’ Jackson handed him his crutches and said: ‘Come on slowcoach, let’s find out what’s in there.’
The younger animals followed Matty and Jackson to the barn and inside they found a haystack.
‘What do I want with a haystack?’ said the hedgehog, disappointedly.
Jackson beckoned his friend closer and encouraged Matty to prod the hay with a crutch. The top of the stack crumpled and he yelled out: ‘Wow!’
His friends rushed forward to help him and dived into the hay. At the bottom sat a shiny blue go-kart.
Sam quietly came up behind him. ‘Do you like it? We thought this will be more fun than a cart, and look, I’ve made a rack for your crutches. We are proud of you, Matty,’ he said, hugging his son.
