Matty looked at the beaming faces before him, and tears trickled down his cheeks. He felt thrilled yet embarrassed by the attention. Jackson noticed his friend’s discomfort and nimbly hooked a cord to the front of the go-cart.
‘Time for a test run. Clear the way: we’re coming,’ he called.
Matty sat down on the seat and clipped his crutches in place. He was pulled from the barn through two lines of cheering animals waving streamers. Sophia and a host of fairies were waiting for him by a campfire.
‘It’s good to see old friends and welcome new ones to our snow picnic,’ she said. ‘Matty’s family have asked me to say a few words on their behalf. They have been overwhelmed by messages of goodwill, cards and gifts. Your love and continuing support has made it easier for them to overcome a difficult time in their lives.
‘Matty, you have inspired everyone and showed us that anything is possible when you try. We wish you and your family well.
‘Now! It’s time to open the food hampers and enjoy this wonderful food before you start work on the snow animals. Let’s make this snow picnic the best ever, and a Happy Christmas to you all!’
After rounds of rapturous applause, a little voice piped up: ‘Dad! Will you and Velvet help me make my snow animal, please? I want to win the first prize? What will it be, Dad?’
