Tall Ships Trust day trip for young carers on Challenger 2
The Trust has not been able to put on sailing or other on the water activities for young carers in 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions. Many of our young carers are
in vulnerable positions because they are looking after family members who are shielding. SWAC have not been running any courses or sessions. We needed to find alternative activities we could offer.
The Club has had a close relationship with theTall ShipsYouthTrust, formerly,Sail Training Association for some years and with their help and a bursary awarded by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, we arranged a day trip for ten young carers from Southampton, New
Forest and Romsey on Challenger 2.This is a 22 metre (72ft) steel round the world challenge yacht which was part of Chay Blyth Global Challenge events.
Despite a forecast of 40 knot winds and rain the children gathered early on Thursday morning 29th October at the Town
Quay Marina. Skipper Mike carried out COVID-19 checks on the quay and then briefed and prepared the young people, and their two adult staff members for the session.
A great day was had by all.

HARBOUR REDEVELOPMENT COMPLETED FOR 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour on the Beaulieu River is marking its golden anniversary with the completion of the second phase of its £2m redevelopment this spring.
Half a century since the marina opened in 1971, the newly remodelled marina is now ready for the changing demands of boating with the addition of 66 new berths, as the 35 berths completed over the winter join those built during phase one. Included are large berths capable of accommodating vessels of 18 metres and above.
With glowing feedback already received
for the first phase’s dedicated visitor area, upgraded electrical services and the increase in walk-ashore pontoons, Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is continuing to look to the future while retaining its unique character, which has made it one of the south coast’s most cherished sailing destinations for 50 years.
Following the easing of lockdown,
Buckler’s HardYacht Harbour is looking forward to welcoming new and existing visitors for 2021. For sailors who would like to moor their boats on the Beaulieu River, a small deposit will secure their reservation for permanent river moorings and marina berths.
