What is super compost?
Tony Callaghan, a soil scientist and owner of SoilFixer, looks at the bene ts of super compost and how to make it
A few years ago, we asked ourselves a question: Does compost quality vary? And if so, what would a super compost look like?
Our investigations show that well-matured compost comprises two parts: particulate organic matter (POM) and colloidal humus.
The brown pieces of POM, which range from one to 10mm pieces, degrade swiftly; within 18 months they disappear into carbon dioxide and release nutrients into soil. Colloidal humus is made up of tiny particles of a sticky dark brown substance and remains in soil for many years.
The major bene ts derived from compost come from this tiny fraction of colloidal humus. Our tests show that compost with more colloidal humus leads to better plant growth; in fact, we had 20 to 50 percent more crop yield!
Why use super compost?
Adding colloidal humus to vegetable plots and container mixes undoubtedly improves soil.
Bene ts include improving soil water retention, re-wetting after periods of dry weather, holding and releasing nutrients, and re ning soil aggregation leading to better aeration. It’s also jam-packed with trace mineral nutrients, and typically survives in soil for over 100 years.
How to make your super compost
Sprinkle the SoilFixer Humi cation Agent onto green waste when adding it to compost. Our tests show that it increases the colloidal humus matrix by up to 40 percent of the compost mix.
Once made, add it to containers and vegetable plots. You’ll soon notice plants in pots and containers are revitalised and your vegetables grow more vigorously.
