Leeds Allotment Gardeners – Social Evening
Following the judging of the Leeds Allotments by the Leeds & District Allotment Gardeners Federation in July, came the Federation’s ‘Social Evening’. This is what the title suggests, but it is also for the presentation of awards for the winners of the allotments competition. Any money raised at the event is donated to a chosen charity; this year it was Perennial.
Cllr Jane Dowson, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, was invited and gave a short but interesting introductory speech. This was followed by a very enlightening talk given by Nick Smith, the Director of the prestigious Harrogate Flower Shows. It was all about what goes on behind the scenes at the shows.
Two of our members, Jane and Sue, ran a very effective fundraising tombola.
Then there was the presentation of the awards by the Lord Mayor. ‘Best Allotment Plot’ went to Brian Jenner (very envious of his waistcoat and his allotment plot). ‘Best Allotment Site’ went to Parkside, Meanwood and was received by their secretary, Steve Beales.
As the evening drew to a close we had our ‘auction’ by a very amateur auctioneer - me. The main prize was a weekend for two at Witton Castle Country Park.
It was a lovely evening and it raised £450 for the charity Perennial.
