Denford had a branch of the Temperance Society called the Band of Hope dating from the 1880’s, in which people were encouraged to ‘sign the pledge’ to refrain from all intoxicating drinks. A rare survivor, the original form is shown.
The Bell Inn, Islip in High Street dates from 1880 and is seen in this delightful old postcard dated 1905. The obligatory group of children stand at the side of the road whilst a lady holds onto her rather large hat whilst cycling along
a very uneven road. The second picture is from 1941 and the building is now a private residence.
During my very recent research into Islip I
found another establishment, called the Royal Oak, existed in circa 1850. More details will follow in my next Islip “Glance”.
When the next issue of Strapetona comes out, possibly in 2023, there will be an extended article on the village pubs, both closed and still open, covering communities in: Aldwincle, Clopton, Denford, Islip, Lowick, Slipton, Sudborough, Thorpe Achurch, Twywell and Woodford.
Thank you for your continued support for this series of local history articles.
