CADET REPORT
So another season of cadets is over, it’s been a good year with
a healthy mix of success and fun. The weather has on the whole been kind to us and delivered mostly sunny Saturday mornings and some good winds on Tuesday evenings.
Tuesday evening Cadets to flourish and develop a love of being on the water. Bru Pearce, often to be found in his trademark Panama Hat, has spent many an hour repairing our Club Boats and encouraging the young sailors afloat – to him and everyone else who helps keep the club fleet going – THANK YOU!
As the year progressed there were many cadets whose confidence grew week on week, with improved helming skills, the ability to manage increasingly stronger winds and an understanding of tides, and wind directions all enabling them to make their way safely around the estuary. Whether aiming to be racers or just cruising around, these are all essential elements of being a competent sailor and ensuring that you have
This year we introduced the “AI” – Assistant Instructor to the sessions, the idea being
to provide some much-needed help to
the Cadet Leaders whilst giving some invaluable experience to those graduating from cadets and wishing to pursue dinghy instructor ambitions once they reach
16. On the whole it has worked well and enabled the very new cadets to get on
the water quickly with the AI’s as helms whilst giving the AI’s a good introduction to helping new sailors gain in confidence.
Tuesday evening Cadets enjoy the relative quiet of the early evenings but once upon the water the sounds of fun and enjoyment soon ripple back to the shore! Chris Spencer Chapman and Barney Greenhill have both been helping with SYC Cadets for well over twenty years and we are so fortunate that when their own children grew up they themselves have stayed on and generously give their time and experience
