SAILING COORDINATOR’S LOG
Our Sailing Programme takes a huge amount of collaboration
to fit in all the many sailing events. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the planning, Rear Commodore Sailing Simon Dobson, the Sailing Committee and the Fleet Captains.
to Chris Stidson-Knot who gave us very valuable pre-season training and will do so again in April 2020. We are also planning safety scenarios with Chris Winzar and
the RNLI team. Chris regularly gives us advice with our safety boats and we are enormously grateful for his reliable wisdom!
The spinlock lifejackets in our safety boats are so comfortable to wear, please don’t forget to do so. One person in each boat should be dressed ready to get
wet and we ask that this person wears
a Buoyancy Aid. Please always wear the appropriate safety equipment – as well
as always using kill cords – yes even for the smallest of trips from the safety boat moorings to the Watch House steps – please be vigilant!
We are immensely grateful for the Harbour Master, Cameron Sims-Stirling, and his team. We appreciate all that they do to help the SYC calendar of events run
smoothly and are particularly grateful to Phil Goodhead for helping make the
Fairway operate well, particularly on busy days.
We must thank Adrian Griffin for his skills in pulling this busy sailing schedule together in an impressive spreadsheet. Quietly behind the scenes endless emails pass to and fro until the jigsaw of sailing activity falls into place. Approaching 2020 our 125th year we are in good spirits and have lots of opportunities to go sailing at SYC.
The calendar of events we run at SYC would not be possible without our Race Officers and their teams of helpers and
the safety boat drivers and crews. We do ask all active club members to volunteer and would like to thank you for helping
to make the events such a success by your contributions. Anyone wishing to
sign up can do so using the duty man system which is accessed by logging
into the club website with your email and individual password. If you would like to get
involved, please either sign up there or get in touch with the office. This year we have welcomed some new steadfast additions to the safety boat teams. Thank you to each one of you who “Do your Duties” with such commitment and good humour. A special note of thanks goes once again to Margaret Mackley and Gail Allen who continue to improve the smooth running of our Race Weeks and Open Meetings with their organisational prowess – thank you both. Chris Cleaves has recently helped refine our Racing Risk Assessment.
Mike White has done a great job this year of organising RYA courses. Over twenty people have gained their RYA PB2 in the last year. We are keen to provide additional safety boat training highlighting the issues that we come across during Club Racing and other events on the water. Thank you
