Compostable Loo At long last, Lime Grove has got its very own loo!
The two main factors preventing Lime Grove from getting an on-site toilet sooner were access and installation costs.
Nestled amongst houses in the heart of the Bellfields community with pedestrian access only, a septic tank simply could not fit through either gate, whereas installation costs to provide a flushing loo would have been prohibitive – and with only nine plots, not realistically viable for such a small site. Once some funding became available however – and with a top up grant of £150 from the NAS – Derek the Warden set his heart on a compostable toilet from Dunster House.This eco-friendly waterless toilet system boasts easy DIY installation, requires no plumbing, produces reusable waste and, most importantly, would not break the bank!
The toilet arrived ahead of schedule, and once the base was laid, Derek wasted no
time assembling the unit.The instructions were easy enough to follow but it did take longer than anticipated.The toilet also came with solar panel technology to power the water pump for the hand basin and the overhead light – as with no windows there is no natural light once inside with the door closed. Fitting the actual toilet and solar panels was more challenging but before long, Lime Grove had a fully functional compostable toilet with hand basin and a water supply.“Plotholders will no longer have the excuse of saying they have to go home to go to the loo – and never come back!” says Derek.
And the final decision – what colour to paint the new addition to the site? It was unanimous – lime green of course!
