NEWINGTON
ALLOTMENT
ASSOCIATION
The Newington (Sittingbourne) Allotment Association is located in Newington, North Kent. Our allotments date back to 1974, when a site was chosen due to the expansion of the village. We have 45 plots that are highly sought after by Newington residents and creatively maintained.
We are blessed with a quiet location surrounded by woodlands, apple orchards and the village Recreation Area. Every year, our allotment association has a stand at our Village Fete, which takes place adjacent to our allotment plots.
At our Fete last year, the winds damaged our gazebo beyond repair. A generous 50% matched-funding grant from the South-East Branch of the National Allotment Society, enabled us to replace our gazebo in time for the Fete this year.We had fantastic weather, and the Fete was a huge success.
The new gazebo provided lovely shade (and rain shower protection!) and helped to keep our produce fresh.
We sold herb baskets, garden and house plants (all planted and raised by members), freshly cut greens and rhubarb. We also held a raffle for an allotment hamper, offered villagers the chance to play an allotment themed tombola game with tempting
prizes and, for the first time, created floral arrangements from fresh-cut flowers.
Considerable effort and planning by our allotment holders is needed every year
to run our stall, but it creates a fantastic opportunity to work as a community
of growers and to share our love of horticulture.
