Awarded Severn Trent Community Funding for ‘communal greenhouse’ (part 2)
In 2022, our allotments in Binley Woods in Warwickshire were fortunate to receive
a £5000 grant from Severn Trent which enabled us to complete our ‘Communal Greenhouse’ project. The building of the communal greenhouse was all done by
our intrepid work party of allotment volunteers. To view a lovely little video compiled by our clever chairman, have a look at this link:(Link toYouTube video ‘Building our Communal Greenhouse’) https://youtu.be/rIPp85LtifA?feature=shared
After its official opening in March 2023 by Paul Salisbury, the Chairman of our Parish Council, we went on to have a fantastic first year. It has been such a useful area: always somewhere to go when it’s raining.Whilst one of the main uses of the greenhouse
is for plotholders to sow and raise their
own young plants for their allotments,
we use it to grow produce for our local food bank. We have established good links
with our local food bank in Coventry and with the help of the greenhouse and donations from our generous plotholders, we managed to take a basket or two of fresh produce to them every week last year during the
summer growing season. Here’s hoping for a repeat performance this year!
The greenhouse also has a generous seating area where we hold our monthly committee meetings and most importantly have well-earned tea/coffee and cakes after our regular Monday morning work parties. Julie Doubleday
