READ SCHOOL’S
2 YEAR JOURNEY

Back in 2022 the Cadet Training Teams from both the Army and RAF sections at Read school presented to us the history of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
at our school. This is something which has spanned over a century, yet we also learnt the concerning fact that the CCF's existence was under threat with a key issue being staffing challenges.
With over a decade of experience as a DofE volunteer, I have always believed in the importance of extracurricular opportunities. One of the reasons
I cherish my position as a teacher at Read School
is this shared ethos. The extracurricular pursuits
are not only encouraged but celebrated by senior management. Read School is very inclusive, ensuring every child, regardless of their ability, has the chance to participate and thrive, emphasising the values of enjoyment and continuous learning.
The CCF seemed like the ideal platform to develop a sense of adventure, confidence and teamwork within pupils, all of which I deem essential. Lacking a military background, I had some reservations about my compatibility within CCF. After several meetings to familiarise myself with the CCF, I offered to take on the role of Contingent Commander at Read School, alongside a newly assembled team of CCF staff.
It has certainly been a very steep learning curve. Despite the daunting nature of the task and the vast amount yet to be learned, we have made significant strides forward.
Key to this transformation was the invaluable support of Captain Tom Smith, the Contingent Support Officer, his patience, efficiency, and understanding were evident as he helped us in
