 Annual RAVC Reunion Golf Competition
By Sgt Dan Gregory RAVC
On June 23, 2023, the RAVC Golf Association hosted its annual golf championships
at a new venue, Beedle’s Lake. This year, the event saw the highest number of competitors, with 36 players including veterans, serving personnel, and guests who support the RAVC.
The day began with all golfers gathering at Beedle’s Lake Restaurant for registration. They were treated to bacon butties and good coffee to start their day. Each golfer received a RAVC logo golf ball, a bottle of juice, and a chocolate bar to keep them energized throughout the day. The weather was stunning, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 26 degrees.
Sgt Dan Gregory, the event organizer, and Mr. Dean Williams, an ex-RAVC serving member, conducted a safety brief and went over the rules. They also assigned players to their respective teams. This year, the event received generous donations, which allowed for some spectacular prizes to be offered, including golf bags, golf shoes, hats, gloves, and golf days out.
The competitors would be competing in various categories, such as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, best pair, longest drive, closest to the pin, best guest, veteran’s vs. serving, and the RAVC Chiron cup. There was also a special prize for the spirit of
the game, which would be explained later.
The first group of four teed off at 10:30 am, with subsequent groups following every 8 minutes. The course was challenging but played well. The groups were mixed up
so that experienced players could coach those who needed assistance.
The last group finished their round at 4:00 pm, and the scores were tallied up. All the players gathered around the prize table, eagerly awaiting the announcement of
the winners. The event organizers expressed their gratitude to George McGregor, Wayne Gell, Luke Jones, and the RAVC Association for their generous donations. They also thanked Lt Col Mike Robinson,
the CO DATR, and Mrs Kristy Mccomiskie, the Association Sectary, for their support.
The CO of the DATR presented the prizes, which included Longest
Drive awarded to Mr. Dean Williams, Closest to the Pin (front nine) awarded to Mr Andy Pedlar, Closest to the Pin (back nine) awarded to Mr. Dean Williams, Best Pair awarded
to SSgt Phil Miles and Cpl Nathan Parker-Kiamil, Best Guest awarded to Mr Harry Harrison, and Veterans vs. Serving, which was won by the serving team.
The overall winners were announced as Cpl Anthony Wood
in 3rd place, Sgt Dan Gregory in
2nd place, and Mr. Dean Williams winning the Chiron cup in 1st place. Additionally, a special prize for
the spirit of the game, a wooden spoon, was awarded to SSgt Chris Emberson, who continued playing despite shooting over 180.
The day was a huge success and continues to grow in numbers each year. The organizers expressed their gratitude to everyone who attended and thanked the RAVC Benevolent Fund and sponsors for their support. They look forward to playing at the same location next year with some minor adjustments to make the day even better.
