Short-sightedness is the common term for Myopia - a common eye condition where distant objects are blurred, and those closer, are clearer. It’s common amongst people of all age groups, but it currently affects approximately 80 million children worldwide, and this number is set to increase sharply by 2050.
The average age at which myopia sets in is decreasing rapidly - in 1983, the average age of a child with the early onset symptoms of myopia was 11 years old, whilst by the year 2000, it had decreased to 8 years old.
The onset of short-sightedness can generally be explained by two factors; genetics and behaviour. If one or both parents are short-sighted, a child’s risk of also being short-sighted increases. This,
in addition to over-exposure to computer games, mobile phones or screens can also negatively affect eyesight.
How can I tell if my child is suffering with Mypoia?
Some symptoms to look out for:
• Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
• Difficulty seeing even if at the front of the
classroom
• Not able to see in the distance • Blinking excessively
• Sitting too close to the TV or the screen
• Holding books very close while reading
• Rubbing eyes frequently
• Squinting
Whilst standard glasses or contact lenses will help a shortsighted person see more clearly, they won’t prevent continuing eyesight deterioration. We have recently partnered with Coopervision, who have developed MiSight - a range of daily disposable contact lenses proven to reduce the progression of short-sightedness in children by between 50 and 60%.
