WHITBY SQUADRON EXPEDITION TRAINING
By Warrant Officer Julie Tompkins
On 22nd February cadets from 740 (Whitby) Squadron participated in practical initial expedition training. The sessions included different types of tents and their advantages followed by how to put up their tents safely.
The cadets then learnt about different types of clothing and equipment, in addition to the layering system and how to pack a rucksack, and were able to put this into effect on their afternoon walk. Finally, to conclude the morning, the cadets learnt about expedition cooking before experimenting with foods and cooking themselves a filling lunch to supplement their packed lunches. In the afternoon they enjoyed practicing their navigation on a walk around the local area, the walk included practicing compass and map reading, and took in a local key feature... the local ice cream parlour! After suitably refueling on their ice creams the cadets continued their walk back to the squadron, learning about timing and pacing along Long Rigg.
