AN ADVENTUROUS START TO ADULT TRAINING POST COVID
By Sergeant Major Instructor Zara Thorpe
Humberside & South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force are forging ahead with Adult Development Training post COVID. Thanks to all our fantastic Adult Development Officers, subject matter expert training leads and course directing staff we have, so far, managed to conduct numerous training packages. A few of those are explained below.
Initial adult induction training for all our newly recruited Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. This training is delivered over a package of several weekends and mid-week evening sessions with dedicated Adult Development Officers. Induction training covers all aspects of being a volunteer in the Army Cadet Force and is a key grounding that all adult volunteers go through, to build a solid foundation in safeguarding young adults, safety in all aspects of training and providing the tools needed for new members to become Cadet Force Instructors.
First Aid at Work and Tourniquet training which enables us to support the running of training such as cadet first aid and fieldcraft. Without the correct level of medical cover, key activities that form part of the overall cadet experience cannot take place.
Adult Basic Shooting and Coaching courses which give our many adult volunteers the knowledge and skills to pass on and help our cadets work towards their marksmanship qualifications. All of our cadets then have the opportunity to represent their company and County at regional and national competition events like the Brigade Skill at Arms Meeting (SAAM) and the various annual Bisley competitions.
Adult Signals Instructor Qualifications, these courses teach our volunteers how to deliver safe and fun training on the cadet force signals equipment. Once our cadets are trained to use this equipment it enhances their fieldcraft experience by adding more realism and cadets also have the opportunity to then enter national signals competitions hosted by Blandford.
External Leadership Courses including Duke of Edinburgh’s award qualifications, navigation qualifi- cations, expedition training and adventurous training such as paddle sport introduction courses. Leadership Courses and Specialist Training such
as officer development weekends, Detachment Commander training and dangerous goods awareness courses. All of which are key elements in the running of the huge machine that is Humberside & South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force. Our adult volunteers have been extremely busy recruiting and training cadets, in addition to taking extra time to gain further personal development to enhance the Cadet Force experience that we deliver across every part of our County.
A special thank you to 4 Brigade Cadet Training Team and HSY’s Permanent Support Staff for supporting us in delivering all this training so far. There is much more planned for the rest of 2022 including adult development training courses running on our annual camp!
Music Cadets and 3 Star Drill Cadre work together By SSI Donna Nixon
During a recent training weekend cadets from the Humberside and South Yorkshire Band and Corps of Drums practiced alongside cadets from the 3 Star Drill cadre. Their music added an extra element to the drill training and helped both to hone their skills. Both groups enjoyed the experience with fantastic progression made both for new starters and established cadets.
On the Saturday evening Officers and Instructors were treated to a musical display which incorporated audience participation, and which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The weekend closed with Cpl Wilson marched out of camp by her peers through a cadet lined procession.
If you are interested in military
music the Band (based in Hull)
is currently recruiting. They are particularly keen to attract cadets who can play or are interested
in learning any of the following instruments; trombone, baritone, tuba, cornet, trumpet, tenor horn, French horn, concert flute, clarinet or saxophone. The Corps of Drums (based in Doncaster) are looking for side drum, tenor drum or cymbal players. Instruments and tuition are available.
