739 (SCARBOROUGH) SQUADRON LEARNED TO FLOAT WITH
SCARBOROUGH RNLI

Air cadets from 739 (Scarborough) Squadron participated in an important visit by the water safety team of Scarborough RNLI and a visit to the RNLI station to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during April 2024.
The water safety team gave a bespoke two-part programme focused on the RNLI200 and water safety, with the first part being delivered on Friday 12 April 2024. As 2024 is the 200th anniversary
of the RNLI, the session covered an overview of
its history as the charity that saves lives at sea. It also highlighted the historic connection between Scarborough RNLI and the Royal Air Force, sharing

anecdotes of when Scarborough RNLI worked alongside RAF Search and Rescue. Finally, the cadets learnt about how the RNLI volunteers and some of the acts of selfless sacrifice made by members of Scarborough RNLI over the decades.
The second section of the evening focused upon water safety, in particular, what to do if they found themselves in difficulty in the water, including how to overcome cold water shock and ‘Float to Live’, plus how to identify a Rip current and what to do if they found themselves caught in one. Time was also spent identifying the meaning of the flags found on RNLI lifeguarded beaches and who to call if they see
