Colonel Kevin Davies was appointed Colonel Commandant QARANC in May 2020. A Professor of Nursing, Vice Chair and Non-Executive Director of the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust and Independent Trustee of St John Ambulance Cymru, he has as been engaged in international nursing and wider healthcare delivery, education, training and relationship building for over 30 years. He is the immediate past President of Confédération Interalliée des Officers Médicaux de Réserve (CIOMR) the NATO organisation comprising medical reservists from across the NATO family and its affiliates. In this role he provided leadership across the spectrum of NATO medical capability. Professor Davies has advised on disaster healthcare, education and training in the UK, USA (Department of Homeland Security), Japan (Kobe earthquake evaluation with Higher Education colleagues) as well as advising on the development of the Disaster Nursing Global Leader (DNGL) Doctorate programme.
In Hong Kong where he was an Honorary Fellow at HK Polytechnic University he was instrumental in assisting their evolving disaster healthcare and nursing strategy. This in turn was critical in ensuring that the Hong Kong response to the Szechuan Earthquake in 2008 was of a high standard.
Professor Davies trained as a nurse in Wales in the late 1970’s and subsequently worked in Accident and Emergency. He joined the Territorial Army in 1983. Following specialist training in Accident and Emergency Nursing he joined the Regular Army in 1987. Completing the short course at Sandhurst he served with 34 Evacuation Hospital, the Duchess of Kent’s Military Hospital as Charge Nurse A&E and 23 Parachute Field Ambulance as Training and Nursing Officer. On completion of his time in the Regular Army he returned to Wales as a nurse lecturer and re- joined the TA. In his professional life he has always sought to bring the field experience to life in academic study in order to ensure that nursing and other healthcare professionals are able to deliver high quality care as well as evaluate, analyse and plan effectively.
Operational deployments include Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Member of Defence Engagement Missions to China, Estonia. Hungary, Kenya and South Korea. Command appointments include Officer Commanding 144 Parachute Medical Squadron, Commanding Officer 203 Field Hospital and Deputy Commander 160th Infantry Brigade and HQ Wales.
Bringing field experience to bear and in collaboration with the NGO and defence communities he developed from first principles a successful multi-professional, multi-national MSc in Disaster Healthcare and was course director for over 10 years. He undertook a full spectrum of teaching and supervision roles across the University Faculty from undergraduate to PhD. He was Queen’s Honorary Nurse 2009 to 2012 and Chair of the Military Education Committee for the combined universities of Wales from 2006 to 2013. He is a qualified teacher and completed an MA in Sports Science 1994 and a PhD 2009 Specialising in Education and Training for Disaster Healthcare Professionals.
In 2013 he became a voluntary advisor to the international NGO The HALO Trust assisting in ensuring the highest levels of healthcare for expat and indigenous employees in their roles aimed at clearing the scourge of mines and munitions in order that people can live sustainable lives. This entails simulating casualty evacuation scenarios within cleared lanes of minefields as well as other challenging terrain. Deployed to the Ivory Coast twice on a UN funded Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR Operation). Lao PDR where the clearance of munitions from the Ho Chi Minh Trail is still a challenge from a post-Vietnam War legacy. Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh where the massive
minefields are a significant challenge that can potentially involve prolonged care needs during evacuation of injured and Ukraine operating in the East of the country.
Professor Davies is Patron of the young people’s charity the Motivation and Learning Trust and is an ambassador for cancer charity Prostate Cymru delivering men’s health and awareness sessions as well as one to one supportive consultations.
