The Chadwell Heath Smallholdings Society in Redbridge are delighted and proud to have struck up an agreement with the local artist, Karen Humpage, to undertake a yearlong project recording the many and varied “goings on”
which take place on an allotment site throughout the year.
Karen’s subjects will include the plants (living, growing, and dying!), the plots, the people, and the wildlife – especially the insects.

Karen is a semi-professional artist
who specialises in house and garden portraits to commission. Her last major personal project involved writing and illustrating a book about free-roaming cows in Epping Forest and its suburbs. A keen gardener and photographer, she grows plants in her small back garden for the benefit of insect life, hedgehogs, and other wildlife.
She has wanted to do a plant-based project for some time now. Ever keen to promote her local area, she decided to showcase a year in the life of the local allotments for the benefit they give to the community and the importance of green spaces in an urban area.
Drawing on a variety of painting styles, she aims to record the different aspects of life on an allotment – the changing seasons, produce, wildlife and human interaction - and anything else that catches her eye on her wanders around the allotments. At the time of writing, she will upload her latest works to her website www.karenhumpage.co.uk at the end of every month.
