It’s been a busy summer
for Bristol East Allotments Association (BEAA)
BEAA has been in existence for over 100 years. They manage seven sites in the St George area on the east side of Bristol, have a Trading Hut on the St Aidans site and play an active part in their surrounding community. This summer the BEAA received an “Outstanding Award” in the RHS “It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards”; the level of award was based on their outlook, achievements, the St Aidans allotment shop and inclusivity.
The BEAA were
also part of the St
George in Bloom entry
that received a Gold
Pennant for a second
year and the best Urban
Communities Trophy in
the entire South West. St George in Bloom have recently been informed that they have been selected by the Royal Horticultural Society to be a national nalist to represent the St George area of Bristol and the entire South West region as an urban entry in the RHS national competition in August 2016.
As part of the Greater Bristol Pollinator Network, the St Aidans site also hosted
a summer meeting of the Get Bristol
Buzzing team. Dr Katherine Baldock from Bristol University’s urban pollinators project commented that the St Aidans site was one of the best she had seen in supporting bees and other pollinators. The network have produced, in collaboration with the RHS
and the Society, a list of owers suitable for planting on an allotment to support pollinating insects; the lea et is available on: http://www. avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/getbristolbuzzing.
Four of the BEAA sites also featured in the Bristol Get Growing Garden Trail, as part of the Chelsea Fringe. This annual event celebrates local food growing projects, aims

The Society has worked with the Get Bristol Buzzing team and the RHS to produce a list of pollinator friendly
to raise their pro le in the neighbourhood and inspire more people to grow their own food.
Despite the inclement weather, the Annual BEAA Show in August was an enjoyable day with some good exhibits and stiff competition for the cups.
Bristol Zoo kindly donated a family ticket for the raf e and the Hawk and Owl Trust brought along some of their birds and put on another great display. The Chair would like
to thank all the committee and plot holders who worked so hard to make the show a great success. The annual show is not only a celebration, but is an opportunity for all
the sites to get involved and feel that they belong to a wider group; it also opens up the site to the local community, although some visitors visited from as far a eld as Chepstow and Cheltenham.
