Southern Region’s stand at the Royal County of Berkshire Show
The Royal County of Berkshire Show
On the19th and 20th September, the Southern Region attended two days when the Society was promoted to a regular stream of the Royal County of Berkshire Show, for the rst time, with a stand visitors. As one of Britain’s top ten agricultural shows, it attracted
in the Flower Tent. Our stand at the Show was
a result of the efforts of the Southern Region Representative, Jenny Crawford, to secure a
presence. Traditionally, the Flower Tent had been
home to various plant growers’ trade stands, the inter-village displays, oral art and horticultural competitions for children. For the rst time this
year, a “grow your own” fruit and vegetable
class was introduced so it was most appropriate
that our stand was just opposite the displays for that class.
Three members of the Southern Region Committee, Tim Cann, Alan McPherson and Mike Cantillon, manned the stand over the
people from various parts of the country and gave us the opportunity to meet and discuss gardening matters with visitors who had many varying interests in gardening and “grow your own”. We had many serious enquiries regarding membership and visitors took away the essential details for joining the NAS. Most were particularly impressed with the bene ts to be gained from the seed scheme with Kings. In addition to those in
our Region, two of the members we “signed up” at the Show were from South East Region and Eastern Region.

Drybrook Annual Awards
For the rst time this year, a “grow your own” fruit and vegetable class was introduced
On an unseasonal September Sunday afternoon, the Drybrook Allotment and Leisure Gardeners’ Society, Gloucestershire, held their annual awards presentation and BBQ at
the allotment site on Morse Road. Following an extremely productive and successful year, it has been gratifying to see the number of tenants and plot numbers increase.
The Society’s landlords, Steve Meek and Fawn Bennett, were on hand to
present prizes to the winners. Single plot winner was Dave Ridler and the runner up was Jill Trotman. Double plot winners were Ali and Helen Thackway, and the runners up were Paul and Kirsty Tarry. The three plots and above category was won by Dave and Sue Scrivens and Janet Phelps was runner up.
The Society is now building on the successful development of the site with additional tree planting and the establishment of a Sensory Garden for
Drybrook’s Annual Awards Presentation
use by the local community. Although
in the early stages, fundraising and consultation is already well underway for this project.
