  Newlands Lane Allotments Open Day
local press went along the lines of: it was OK, but preferred another engine. The presentation of a selection of gifts, including a Thomas the Tank Engine cake, seemed appropriate and was followed by refreshments.
The committee would like to express their gratitude to all those who supported the event.
As previously the event was deemed
a success and hopefully something
we can repeat next year, without the shadow of Covid hanging over everyone.
Newlands Lane Allotments committee
    On Sunday 15th of August, we held an open day in conjunction with National Allotments Week. We invited the local civic dignitaries, Mayor, Mayoress and Deputy to officiate the event. This was, like others, our first real chance to open the site to the general public since the pandemic struck, allowing plotholders to demonstrate what can be achieved not only in providing a wide and diverse range of fresh fruit and vegetables but also the recognised benefits to body and mind.
Workington Town Council, as our landlord, recognise Newlands Lane
Allotments as the flagship site. The open day event gave other sites
within the town an opportunity to see for themselves what can be achieved with a little effort and goodwill. As this was our first chance to get together as a group, it was decided to mark another special occasion; Doc Sewell is both the oldest and longest standing plotholder with over 50 years on the site.
During Doc’s working career with British Rail, as a driver in February 1980, Doc had the opportunity to drive the Flying Scotsman train, not once but twice. We believe his comments to
