Mis-timed visit
I have never before been to Ripon Allotment Show, which is held on Ripon Racecourse, so I resolved to go.
Unfortunately, I didn’t know the timings of the show and arrived as the RHS judge was just departing. It turned out this was 2 hours before the show was due to open.
The Chair of Ripon Allotment Federation very kindly allowed my wife and I to look around the exhibits whilst they were still doing preparations. There was some ‘reet grand stuff’ on display, and lots of shiny cups all polished up ready for the winners.
For many years now, I have had Fisher Green Allotment, Ripon, imprinted in my mind. Why that is, I do not know. When asking the chair where they were, he replied: “Just opposite the entrance to the show”. I felt I must go and see them now that I was so close.
The very first person I asked for permission to look around the site turned out to be one of the site representatives, Eric Kitchen. He was extremely obliging and gave my wife and I a very interesting tour, and a natter with one or two of the plotholders. We even got to see the winning plot from the ‘Best Plot in Ripon’ competition. Eric was such a pleasant man and obviously does a lot for the site and all in all we had a very interesting visit. Thank you, Eric, for devoting your precious gardening time to us. It was a ‘Grand Day Out!’
      Sad loss
of a Leeds Allotments stalwart
Melvin Nowland, an allotment plotholder and Trustee at Headingley Station West Allotments in Leeds, has sadly died following a long illness.
He was committed to the preservation of the allotment movement in Leeds and could be, quite rightly, outspoken
to influences he thought detrimental to the allotment movement in Leeds.
He was and has been a regularly active member of the Leeds Allotments Federation for more years than I can remember.
Even when wheelchair bound, he attended meetings regularly and events when he could. He showed a very commendable commitment and remained
a stalwart to our allotment movement in Leeds.
His contribution to the preservation and running of allotments in Leeds will be sadly missed.
