                                    Shedding Light
Newlands Lane Allotment site recently achieved another significant milestone, with the installation of off-grid solar panels complete with a battery back-up system and solar powered light poles.
We installed the solar light poles along the main access path. These are fitted with PIR sensors and were positioned with consideration to our neighbours. The units being low powered LED cast a pool of light three by eight metres and provide additional security to the site and neighbours.
We specified sufficient capacity within the solar system to meet our requirements. These include power sockets and lighting
to main double container (club house), tool storage shed with charging points, and finally lighting to our eco toilet.
As part of our drive to improve our overall green credentials, the system will allow us to replace our petrol powered equipment, once they come to the end of their usefulness, with rechargeable equipment.
None of this would have been possible without the fantastic
support we received from the Robin Rigg Community fund, who believed in our vision for the site and what a small northern allotment site can achieve with a little effort and goodwill.
As we move forward, we are looking at improving/increasing the site wide water collection system. This year (2021) is probably the first year in a very long time we have had no reason to turn on the mains water supply. The planned increase in our water storage capacity will ensure we should never have to rely on mains water; another small step in the sites ability to become self-sufficient.
