   Let’s get growing
Beaumaris Allotments Society has recently welcomed a new addition to its growers. 4-year-old Elliot really enjoys visiting the ‘plotment’ belonging to Will Roberts, his Taid (Welsh for grandfather). He is extremely proud of his sunflower, which he sowed at school, and which is now safely planted on Will’s plot. Will and Elliot have also planted pumpkins, which are coming on really well.
The Society is very keen to encourage youngsters to join in with their families on the allotments. They have special awards for children such as ‘Junior Giant Pumpkin Grower of the Year’ which is a very popular award every year. Will from Llangoed on Anglesey is a volunteer with Beaumaris RNLI. He is a relatively new plotholder but has kindly joined the Society committee and taken over the role of Site Manager from his former Beaumaris RNLI colleague Dave Jones. Elliot is enjoying watching all his plants growing, and we are sure we have a future plotholder in the making. Both Will and Elliot enjoy reading The National Allotment Society’s magazine.

  Butternut Squash Peeling made Eazy!
The Autumn months have seen butternut squash being grown on
our allotments in abundance, it is a magnificent sight to see in all its finery, all the different shades of vibrant colour and crazy shapes.
It is a delicious, seasonal squash that can be cooked in a variety of ways – baked or roasted, in a puree, in soups or stews and as a sweet addition to other hearty winter dishes.
Preparing a hard-shelled butternut squash can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be now thanks to the newly launched Ultimate Butternut Squash Peeler.
A Leicestershire couple set about
to design a peeling solution aimed primarily at the butternut squash after always finding it such a laborious task to prepare. Theyalsowantedtoprovidea solution for people with arthritis in their fingers and hands, enabling them still to peel vegetables and fruit without effort.
The Eazy Peel is a hand-held, mains powered device. With its smooth, cutting momentum it glides through the hard skin following the curves of a butternut in less than 2 minutes, cutting close to the squash.
Its ergonomic design has a detachable stainless steel blade head required for easy cleaning, and a one touch safety power button.
