On the Move. In September 2017 as part of the Army Training Governance Review all three RAPTC officers moved from Army Training Branch to their new home in
Blenheim Building as part of the Career Development (CD) Pillar within Individual Development (IDev) Branch. After a frantic period of initial in-briefing for the new Brigadier and Acting Head, which outlined the breadth of PD policy and assurance portfolio, the tempo has now settled from a sprint to a steady run. Along with the move came a broadening of my job role to cover all Army Basic and Individual Training policy and the Army Training Development Team in addition to PD policy. As you will read from the desk officer’s submissions that follow, working at the Army HQ is a unique experience providing challenge but also great opportunity to effect changes for the better. Our current focus on developing and delivering a new suite of Role Fitness Tests
for Ground Close Combat roles, removing the Physical Fitness Assessment and resetting physical fitness testing to align with the new Army Physical Training System, is one such opportunity that does not come around often. This necessary adjustment to physical fitness testing is long overdue and is the most significant policy change project for over two decades. Without the support of bright motivated desk level staff officers the Army HQ machine would quickly grind to a halt, luckily I am fortunate to have Maj Nick O’Shea now negotiating the choppy waters of AT & Sport policy and Maj Ian Phillips double hatted running the PT policy desk and the PES policy development project. Both do sterling work and always produce the goods so thank you. In May, Ian Phillips moves on with a well deserved promotion to Lt Col and we wish him the best of luck with the new challenges ahead.

My shift at Army HQ has finally come to an end and I am now looking forward to joining SHA as SO1 Health Promotion. I reflect fondly on my time in Army Training
Branch, and now Individual Development Branch (I Dev). Working at a high tempo with frequent demands on your time is par for the course at Army HQ but it is equally rewarding working within a high performing team. The sphere of influence is wide, both in the
Army and across the other Services, it can be painstaking slow at times but always worth the effort.
Together with the Women in Ground Close Combat (WGCC) project the Army has invested in producing new legally defendable, age and gender free vocational employment standards termed Physical Employment Standards (PES). Legally PES must be representative of the job that individuals perform, and each
