Of surprise since arriving in Army HQ, is the time it takes to get policy completed and authorised, it is a complex beast and reaches across many domains; writing user friendly policy is no easy task and getting it wrong can have far reaching consequences.
Battlefield Study (BS). In June 2017 Army Training Branch (ATB) staff deployed on Ex URBAN FOX a Battlefield Study to Aachen and Dunkirk to analyse WW2 Battles with a focus on force preparation of combined arms units, review the conduct of battles and understand how lessons from historic campaigns can help the development of training facilities and methodologies in the modern context. The exercise case studies linked to ATB work threads, specifically Project CASSINO. Additionally, the exercise provided the opportunity to enhance morale and team cohesion; the BS was thought provoking and insightful, the following pictures give a flavour of the exercise.

Sport and Adventurous Training (AT). For anyone interested in working at Army HQ there are excellent opportunities for AT and Sport. The General’s Cup, the Challenge Cup and escaping the desk on Wednesday afternoons for inter unit competitions are opportunities to play sport and a break from work. Despite the younger gene pool of DE Officers in D Pers, Maj Nick needed to pull himself and his spikes from retirement for the Army HQ Cross Country, suffice to say after a hilly 11 km course at Tidworth he was hobbling with DOMs for 3 days. Maj Ian Phillips has had an excellent cycling season, the success at the Army Road Race Series and Inter Corps Championship are of particular note, he has also juggled the role of the Army Cycling Events Manager alongside the high level he competes at; Sport and PT at Army HQ are healthy and actively encouraged. Having just arrived at Army HQ, starting to understand the contexts of both policy and the HQ set up, Maj Nick O’Shea was able to escape the office to support
