Further individual success came through SSgt (SSI) Carl McMullen who went on to compete across many international multi-event disciplines, including the World Championships in Ultra Multi- Events in Turnhout, Belgium.
The World Championship of Ultra Multi-Events took place at the end of August attracting the world’s best ultra-decathletes to fight it out for the opportunity to call themselves World Champion in the gruelling event. The event consists of all 20 track and field events completed over two long days of competition and they ranged from the 100m sprint in the morning of day one to the 10000m at the end of day two.
SSgt (SSI) Carl McMullen took part in the event against 69 other male competitors with 10 of these in his age category of Men’s Over 35 years. The event started well for Carl with wins in the first three events the 100m, Long Jump and 200m Hurdles. A strong morning’s competition saw him in the lead by a small margin. The afternoon session again had strong personal events for Carl and this only created a larger lead between himself and his rivals. The competition showed its level of difficulty and it took its toll on the athletes involved. Two competitors picked up injuries and could not continue after day one.
The start of day two and the 110m hurdles event set the tone for what was going to be a strong day for the athlete and with his favoured event the 400m Hurdles and also the Triple Jump it was clear that the Championship was his to lose. Weaker throwing events could have scuppered the plans of taking away a medal but strong performances in all track events on day two built an unassailable lead and he pushed on to win the event comfortably before the start of the final track event – the 10000m.
The winning margin from the second place was a healthy 775 points and during the two days there were other personal achievements for him. The 100m and lesser-known 200m hurdles event British records were broken and multiple World top three times and distances were attained in a hard-fought battle of the nations.
Carl now has the outdoor World title to add to the indoor one he collected in Helsinki, FIN in April and will be looking to defend the title next Spring also in the city of Helsinki.
