Woodman, Smith and McNanara were joined by SSgts Bowen and Fisher and Sgts Price and Jones in the female races. They were ably supported by the “RAPTC Pensioners” aka Capt (DNF) Foreshew, Capt Wilson, WO1 Haniver and SSgt Mansfield.
There were several dazzling individual performances with WO2 Hughes finishing 4th, Sgt Woodman 10th and Sgt Syrett 14th in the senior male race and WO1 Haniver finishing 2nd and SSgt Mansfield 9th in the senior female event. In the team rankings, the RAPTC showed its depth and resurgence with the male masters finishing 6th, the senior females 3rd, the female masters runners up and the senior male team crowned the Inter Corps Championship 2018. Furthermore, on the back of his performance, WO2 Hughes was selected to represent the Army at the Inter Service XC Championships where he finished a very impressive 8th overall (4th Army).
thousand other competitors. This year’s race was registered as the hottest London Marathon since records began. As temperatures soared to 22 degrees, athletes enjoyed every drop of water from the 650,000 bottles of Buxton mineral water handed out.
In some of the most testing conditions I have endured during my previous 19 London marathons, it was not a day for personal bests and that was reflected in the finishing times. However, with the average male and female finishing times of 3:48mins and 4:23mins, respectively, I am happy to report that all of our athletes finished well inside the aforementioned times.

As I reach the end of my tenure as RAPTC XC and Road Secretary and head off to pastures new, I would like to thank every athlete who has supported, assisted and competed for the RAPTC over the past 16 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my secretarial role and feel privileged to have competed alongside some exceptionally talented athletes who have embraced Esprit de Corps. I handover the secretary’s responsibilities to WO2 (QMSI) Russ Hughes and I hope you give him your full support; as you did for me. This is not goodbye from me but more “au revior” as I have no doubt you will see (and hear) me on the start line in the very near future.
