                                      ADVENTURE
TRAINING CAMP
By Civilian Instructor Thea Harrison
During what was potentially the last week of delightful British summer weather, towards the end of August, a group of
21 cadets from Central & East Yorkshire Wing and with the addition of some from Cumbria & Lancashire Wing travelled to the National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre (NACATC) located at Windermere in the Lake District to participate in an adventure training camp. Having waved goodbye to both Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition groups early on Monday morning, the cadets embarked on a
week jam-packed with some of the most exciting outdoor activities the RAFAC offer.
From mountain biking through Grizedale Forest soon after their arrival, low-level walks testing their map reading and navigation abilities on Loughrigg Fell, quite
literally learning the ropes and climbing Cathedral Quarry and Tilberthwaite,
trying their hand at Canoeing, Kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding around
Belle Isle on Lake Windermere, to mighty small-group hikes up Helvellyn, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, to a gentle morning discovering Ambleside rounded off with a lively visit to Go Ape, at Grizedale Forest
on our final day. It has been a pleasure to watch these cadets discover newfound hobbies and interests, and learn skills they'll take with them on future camps and hopefully share with their peers!
An excellent time was had by cadets and staff alike, with our thanks extended to all staff who assisted in facilitating the camp and to all cadets who were brave enough to try something new!
