SILVERSTONE: The Rifles Family Charity Gala
This year’s event proved another great success, and it was encouraging to see many younger veterans and families in attendance. Aimed at raising awareness and funds for the Always A Rifleman Programme (AARP), by its nature, works in collaboration with The Rifleman’s Association and closer synergy will develop though this year to the next event. This was a superb evening which was enjoyed by all, and thanks go to the RIFLES battalions for releasing serving members to sing in an ad hoc choir performance at the beginning of the evening – in particular 5 RIFLES who were integral in providing key support before, during and after the event.

RIFLE CORPS A MAJOR PART OF LIFE AT HARROW SCHOOL
The Harrow Rifle Corps is a major part of school life and training operates under
the four services who have focused on progression through the Basic Cadet Syllabus for year 10 boys entering the Corps and continuation leadership and special- to-arm development training for Fifth and Sixth Form cadets. Aside from the consistent programme on Monday afternoons and field weekends we have been pleased with two highlights this year.
The Contingent arranged the day long Ansell Bowl Competition in March in which all twelve boarding Houses competed in the Drill Competition and Endurance Event, making use of the parade ground, endurance course, cross country course and rifle range. The trophies are keenly competed for, boys spend weeks in preparation of their own choice in all the disciplines under scrutiny. The event was adjudicated by returning former pupils with a new trophy added: the de La Billière Trophy for Leadership in the Fifth Form.
The Harrow Rifle Corps provided a Guard of Honour for this year’s speaker at Churchill Songs, in whose name the school gathers each year to remember. We were delighted

to receive Colonel Chris Brawley. He left the school in 1998 and in 2002 he became the first Old Harrovian graduate of the United States Military Academy West Point. His most recent command appointments (before commencing a tour at War College) were a battalion of the 82nd Airborne and the 1st Ranger Battalion.
We celebrated the success of our staff and partnership with Cadet Expansion Plan Schools at a regional level with Lt Al-Fahad, Harrow High School,
being awarded the RFCA
Certificate of Commendation for
Adult Instructors in recognition
of his long-standing
support and delivery
of training in the
Contingent.
Additionally,
we were
delighted that
three senior
cadets
received Deputy
Lieutenant Cadet
Awards.
