Normandy - D Day 75
In May 2019, nine cadets from the Company, accom- panied by 2Lt Mick O’Connor, travelled to France to take part in the Army Cadet Force Association’s 75th Anniversary D-Day Commemorative visits to ‘The Normandy Beachhead’. Joining hundreds of other cadets from across the UK the group visited Pointe- du-Hoc, OMAHA Beach, the Longues Battery, Bayeux Cemetery and Museum, Pegasus Bridge and Museum, and Hill 112. The visit culminated in all the cadets taking part in a Drumhead Commem- orative Parade at Arromanches, overlooking GOLD Beach and the Mulberry Harbour.
Poetry Success
In November 2018, four cadets from the Company were awarded prizes in the York Remembers Poetry Competition, the theme being World War I/Remem- brance. The competition was run by York Army Museum and was judged by York poet Doreen Gurrey. Winning prizes were Cadets Abi Parr, Finlay Milnes and Tamzyn Moore from Ossett Detachment. Cadet Lance Corporal Mohammed Karolia (Batley Detachment) won the older age category with his poem ‘Drowned in War’. It was a real achievement
for all concerned and a great example of cadets gaining a wider experience through becoming involved in the local community.
Minden Bugle and Drums – The Company’s Cadet Band
Under the leadership of Cadet Force Adult Volunteer, Bugle Major SI Craig Rosser, the band is continuing to develop and grow in numbers. In April 2019 seven cadets from the band attended the National Music Camp at Wathgill, North Yorkshire. They joined over 300 cadets from all over the UK learning new music and ceremonial drill skills as well as having a great time and making lots of new friends. The band entertained the crowds as the Tour De Yorkshire cycle race passed through Ponte- fract in May. In June the band played at the County’s Annual Presentation Day at Strensall supported by members of The Buglers Association of the Light Division and Rifles. The band is very grateful for the support of two non-uniformed volunteers Mr Colin Cranswick (Flute) and Mr Kevin Fawcett (Bugle), both members of The Rifles Association.
