The Army Aviation Centre (AACen) conducts training for both ground and air soldiers. 2 (Trg) Regt AAC delivers the ground training element as Initial Trade Training (ITT) and Subsequent Trade Training. AACen is expanding constantly with the restructure of the station gradually building momentum. The 1st Aviation Brigade Headquarters became active here at Middle Wallop on 1 Apr 20 with a significant manning uplift, thus increasing the requirement to deliver more PT. Pilot training is also scheduled to increase in the very near future, this will also see the need for Air Crew Conditioning courses for Pilots and Aircrew.
In addition to the delivery of PT, there has been a huge drive to improve the health and wellbeing of Service Personnel (SP) including Trainees. As a subsequent result, the Station Gym developed the Holistic Education And Lifestyle Training for a Healthier You (HEALT4HY) programme. The programme works on educating and empowering SP who fall predominantly within the very high risk BCM group. It focuses on three distinct areas, healthy mind, healthy body and healthy diet. All HEALT4HY participants are issued MyZone wearable tech to calculate physical activity through the Watt Bike App and the Army Physical Training System.
Furthermore, all participants are required to attend a Station DOFit course amongst other initiatives.
As a result of the HEALT4HY programme and the successful use of MyZone, the Optimising Human Performance (OHP) team from Army HQ, invited the QMSI and Gym Staff to join them at the Commander Fd Army (CFA) Expo at South Cerney. This was a great opportunity to showcase how wearable tech can be integrated into unit level training improving health and wellbeing. The Gym has also started to try out other initiatives to enhance the users experience, these include utilising tech such as Zwift, which uses Watt Bikes and treadmills. It gives the user the experience of racing against real time competition, anywhere in the world and creates an element of social interaction.
2 AAC fully embrace the importance of Permanent Staff and Trainees conducting AT. As a result, the QMSI is planning to take elements of the Regt to Bavaria, to conduct a ULAT multi activity package later in the year. The Gym has also been involved with taking the Trainees on AT activities such as hill walking and mountain biking as part of MSPD.
