Adventurous Training in Cyprus, what a job! I could write about what I’ve been doing, how hard I’m working and what I’ve achieved in my time here, but I don’t believe MBS readers want to know any of that. Instead I’d rather generate awareness in the readership of how you can use this wing, and others, to develop your junior soldiers and benefit your units.
Across the Adventurous Training Group there is a requirement for Temporarily Employed Elsewhere (TEE) staff. These personnel come from across the services and are attached for anything from 8 weeks to 18 months. No previous AT experience is necessary in the majority of cases, just good personal attributes of maturity and motivation. TEE staff are key to the function of the organisation, covering tasks from general duties, driving and storekeeping through to AT instruction. The potential benefits to both the individuals and their units is enormous; huge professional and personal development and often returning to unit as not just qualified but experienced facilitators for AT.
In the last year, JSATW(C) has done a lot of work to improve the offer to TEE applicants, widen the scope for their employment and recruit suitable personnel. We employ temporary staff for 6-month periods in either a general duties role or to specialise in one of our branches. This is a retention positive opportunity

for some who are at a stage in their career where they need a break from routine. For others, particularly aspiring RAPTCIs, it is an unbeatable chance to develop within the AT schemes, fully immersed in a high risk to life environment on a daily basis. Regardless of the background or motivations of those who come to us, all reap the benefits and the transformational development is often a joy to see.
TEE staff in Cyprus are exposed to a high level of responsibility, not just within the AT disciplines but when acting as liaison for the diverse range of students coming onto island. Within the AT activities, those that specialise have the ability not just for ‘zero to hero’ training but also thorough consolidation of those qualifications and skills. For example, a JNCO, having arrived completely unqualified, has just left the sub aqua branch as a BSAC Dive Leader, Assistant Instructor and with an impressive log book and array of technical diving qualifications. Our general duties personnel have the opportunity to attend any of our courses and usually leave as CI1 and RCS which they can use to great effect at Unit level.
If you have personnel who would benefit from these amazing, career changing opportunities (not only for themselves but to build an organic capability with your AoR) all detail can be found within the DIN: 2020DIN07-039.
