ADVENTUROUS TRAINING FOUNDATION WING CASTLEMARTIN
ATFW(Castlemartin) is situated on the Pembrokeshire coastline in South West Wales and is a Type two Adventurous Training (AT) Wing, that delivers Foundation courses in; Kayaking/Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Summer Mountaineering and Rock Climbing. ATFW(C) also delivers a five- day Multi Activity package for units who wish to engage their Officers and soldiers in Adventurous Leadership and Resilience Training, whilst participating in AT. All activities are booked with simplicity and in minutes via the ATG(A) online booking system via the Defence Gateway.
What is unique about ATFW(C), is that the Wing recruit soldiers (Pte-Cpl) as instructors and deploys them to JSATW Llanrwst in North Wales for three months on a Unit Adventurous Training Leaders (UATL) course. The UATL course provides qualifications and logbook experience in three disciplines (MBLT, RCS, MLT). On return to Castlemartin the newly qualified UATLs spend 9-15 months delivering AT on Multi Activity AT packages, before returning to their parent unit as qualified, experienced AT Leaders and a more confident soldier.
In Summer 2019 there was a full turn around in RAPTC staff, with a newly appointed RAPTC MAA as Wing OC; Capt (MAA) S Cowley. WO2 (QMSI) McLellan the Wing Sergeant Major and Sgt (SI) Crutchley the Chief Instructor replaced WO2 (QMSI) Lingwood and SSgt (SSI) Meehan. The Wing is also staffed with an FTRS SQMS, a Civil Service storeman, office manager and SIOAT. Training delivery is supported by 8-12 UATLs and five contractor civilian AT SMEs.

Since taking over the Wing last Summer the RAPTC and Wing staff have approached training with increased vigour and new plans. Supported by HQ Adventurous Training Foundation Centre in Upavon, the Wing hopes to deliver world class training in an excellent location and also give the opportunity for development in the glorious surroundings of Pembrokeshire and South West Wales.

Now in its fourth year, the Adventurous Training Foundation Centre Headquarters (HQ ATFC) continues to develop in the delivery of both Foundation & Instructor AT Courses.
Almost 5000 students have trained with us over this TY, most leaving with foundation level AT qualifications. The training link between AT participation & operational effectiveness is our primary focus at ATFC, ensuring that our delivery model maximises all opportunities to exploit this link. Leadership development is a key enabler in all of our training delivery, across all courses. This has proven to be hugely positive in our delivery, facilitating the development of our instructors and also contributing to the students` leadership skills.
This last year saw a number of delivery changes including the introduction of ATFC Sub Aqua courses at the national dive centre - Stoney Cove. Another addition to our delivery model this training year is the introduction of Army Gliding Foundation
ATFC RAPTCI’s in the Cairngorms National Park
courses. To achieve the safe and effective delivery of activities across all six of our delivery wings, the diverse and complex world of AT continues to keep us on our toes.
Moving forward to TY 20/21, the HQ continues to grow in order to support our development plans for the delivery of the very best AT for our soldiers. The future is one of excitement and we are all working hard to ensure we succeed in the organisation’s vision. It is a privilege to work in this strand of the Army`s G7 delivery model and one we all recognise.
