  ADVENTUROUS TRAINING FOUNDATION WING (INVERNESS)
Capt (MAA) G Osborne RAPTC
Officer Commanding – Capt Chief Instructor – WO2 (QMSI) (MAA) G Osborne RAPTC T Hicks RAPTC
The Adventurous Training Foundation Wing (Inverness) (ATFW(I)) is based at Cameron Barracks on the outskirts of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands and is responsible for the delivery of Type 2 Adventurous Training (AT) to c1000 students per TY.
ATFW(I) has 2 RAPTCI’s, Capt (MAA) Gaz Osborne is the Officer Commanding with WO2 (QMSI) Tony Hicks the Chief Instructor. QMSI Hicks is congratulated on his selection for WO1 (SMI) and is thanked for all his work during his tenure at the wing, he moves to CANADA in Jun 20 as the Chief Instructor at TEC.
AT has evolved over the past 5 years and is now a vehicle for the delivery of Leadership Development Training (LDT), a concept which is now embedded into all ATG(A) JSAT activities and is based on the principles of ‘Leadership’, ‘Coping Strategies’ and ‘Service Values’ in order to enhance Operational Capability.
ATFW(I) delivers a unique foundation AT experience as the standard 5-day JSAT course is immediately proceeded by a 3-day student lead expedition across the Highlands of Scotland. Aside from the outstanding scenery and training venues, these expeditions often see students travel from coast to coast and/ or cover large distances which give a sense of adventure and exploration to their training experience. Anecdotally, both the instructors and students find that the expedition period creates a space where personal development is maximized and the notion of LDT is realized. During these times the principles of LDT are brought to life giving the student a ‘lived experience’ which they can reflect and learn from many months after they finish their course.
A good day in the office!
Moving into TY 20/21, the ATFW(I) aim to broaden the JSAT foundation delivery opportunities at the wing by conducting Winter Climbing Foundation, Winter Mountaineering Foundation and Sea Kayaking trials, our intention is to deliver these courses as part of our SOTT.
