Cav Cell RMAS Visit Capt (MAA) Mark Greenwood
The Co-ordination Assurance and Validation (CAV) Cell has seen significant changes over the last year, with WO2 (QMSI) Gaz Lewis arriving in post as the Training Validation Warrant Officer (TVWO) and for me, a newly created FTRS role as the Training Assurance Warrant Officer (TAWO).
At the helm remains Capt (MAA) Mark Greenwood as the Co-ordination Assurance and Validation Officer (CAVO), plus WO2 (QMSI) Dean Moss fulfilling the Training Co-ordination Warrant Office (TCWO) role. In addition, we have a stalwart cohort of long serving ASPT civil servants; Chris Burnett, Sue Meadows, Sav Cox, Liz Scrogie and Angela Logan. Each providing the continuity and admin support to those SP wishing to attend either of the 96 courses on offer via 16A process; altogether a formidable team.
The main function of the CAV Cell is “exactly what it says on the tin” the co-ordination, assurance and validation of all sports courses, military courses, distributed training and RAPTC career courses in support of circa 1653 SP in each TY.
New Era
WO2 Moss has promoted a culture of innovation within the department, evidence of which has been the creation and development of the many CAV Cell, SharePoint Pages which hosts all course information and procedures for each student. He has been instrumental in ensuring that all undersubscribed courses are promoted via social media
platforms with support from the Army Sports Control Board.
WO2 Lewis has demonstrated a creative strength by producing 9 separate electronic exams using ‘Moodle Quiz’ for (Health and Safety, Management, PT Theory and Anatomy & Exercise Physiology) hosting these on DLE which has never been done before at the ASPT. In addition, improving working procedures by introducing and utilising several electronic methods and platforms. Producing InVal forms on ‘Microsoft Office Forms’ for all sports courses and ‘Google Forms’ for all military courses, as well as, creating QR codes and links so that students and instructors can complete their InVal Forms remotely.

me, the role of TAWO has given me the opportunity to develop myself in this field, providing a level of assurance to the CoC. My past knowledge and experiences since leaving the Army with Wales Weightlifting as their Education manager and assurance SME has been valuable and provided me the opportunity to transfer much of which into this role. Since arriving, I have been provided with many opportunities to upskill further by attending several DSAT sponsored courses at Shrivenham; InVal......etc
Team Building
A visit was organised in Sep 19 to visit RMAS. This provided an opportunity to tour the many rooms and buildings within the grounds under the guidance of an ‘official tour guide’. An interesting and educational day on all fronts.
As well as work, the team are busy on the sporting front with Capt (MAA) Mark Greenwood representing the Army and RAPTC in road cycling which has resulted in significant success at the highest level in British Cycling events across the UK and abroad.
WO2 (QMSI) Gaz Lewis is the Head of performance for both Army and UKAF Men’s Senior Football Teams.
WO2 (QMSI) Dean Moss is a long serving and valued member of the Army Boxing fraternity, regularly supporting Boxing throughout the UK.
Since returning to the RAPTC fold, I have taken on the role as performance manager for Army Weightlifting. During my time on civi street, I was the Education Manager at Weightlifting Wales, working with Capt (Retd) Ray Williams. This experience stood me in good stead for the challenges of trying to develop Weightlifting in the Military and through the support of the ASPT, we are making significant progress.
The CAV cell prides itself on high quality output and the importance of maintaining the correct balance. This has ensured the standards remain high and excellence is achieved in the workplace and on the sporting front.
