It has been an incredibly busy year within the Regiment, both operational tempo AND a changeover in several key personalities.
The Regiment have something to look forward to as they reach the end of their successful 6-month tour of OP TOSCA. The pace of life has been frantic but rewarding. It doesn’t stop there as the rest of 2020 is also busy,
On arrival in Cyprus the Gymnasium in Ledra Palace, had received a huge uplift of PTE, enhancing both CV and strength equipment, to meet with the demands of the large number of personnel within the unit. The upgrade has dramatically improved the rehabilitation and all-round ability to train smart, in line with the APTS.
Sport remains at the forefront of the Regimental ethos even in Cyprus, the Regiment has entered teams in half marathons, Rugby and football tournaments with success in all events.
50 soldiers across the Regt took part in the Wolf Pack Challenge charity event with 3 activities covering a total distance of 370km, all in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund. The mountain biking took place over two days and covered 96km from Dhekelia Garrison to Episkopi. The road bike covered 200km from Episkopi to Nicosia (over the Troodos Mountains!) and the run covered 74km from Nicosia to Dhekelia through the Buffer Zone. Sections of these routes were unforgiving, but the soldiers pushed themselves beyond their limits. Team work and camaraderie resulted in the target of £2700 was surpassed.
The ROG has equally been successful with their reconditioning programme, returning injured soldiers back fully deployable. The challenge will be continuing the success with the reconditioning Platoon once the Regiment returns from Cyprus.

With my assignment to 10 QOGLR just beginning, it is obvious that the Unit like many are busy. Having just returned from ceremonial duties in London it felt like the main effort of 10 QOGLR was to resume a normal battle rhythm, with PT, Sport and AT firm fixtures in this effort. My first task was to establish a PT programme that supported
the APTS and with an abundance of AAPTIs the quality of coaching on each session is fantastic.
10 QOGLR partake in a Commander’s Sword competition, which sees the Sqns of the Unit compete against one another in various sports throughout the year, finalising with a tug-o-war during the Regimental birthday celebrations. As well as the Colonel of the Regiment Khukuri Challenge which sees the all QOGLR sub-units from across the country compete in a one-day Festival of Sport. The competitive edge is fierce, as every soldier wants to win to showcase their Sqn. Both events draw huge support from the families and local community, making it an even bigger platform and achievement for the winners.
Lastly, I also inherited a very strong squash team and having won the Army Minor Units Squash Championships many moons ago at ATR (W), my aim was to win this competition in the Major Unit category. Unfortunately, as the deadline approaches for this article it is clear we are in unprecedented times, with many sporting events being affected due to COVID-19. The Championships this year were completely cancelled. However, we still managed to arrange a few fixtures with 2 RGR, who we considered our biggest rivals in the competition before all P&RTCs were closed and secured bragging rights before they flew back to Brunei.
