‘Physical fitness is a fundamental requirement of every soldier throughout their service. As such, basic training is pivotal in laying down the foundations of good military character, to be successful, injury free
career and a commitment to healthy living and a lifelong exercise habit’
Having been sat in the 2* Field Army space up in York at 1UKXX for 15 months, the opportunity came about
to move back to the south, and to operate back in Basic Training (BT) and the recruiting pipeline. Taking me back to my former days having once been assigned to ITG (in Upavon), I thought that this was a great opportunity to go back to one of those appointments where
you looked up to previous SO2 PDs in that post and thought.... “one day, I would love to do that job”. Big boots to fill, following in the footsteps of some really fantastic RAPTC Officers.
Lots of great work going on within the HQ and right across the group. There has been a considerable amount of ongoing study, specifically related to the PES research team, working in conjunction with the data gathering requirements set by
Professional Development and the Pers Pol team. The data gathering of statistics, both within the Assessment Centres (ACs), and then through into BT has been complex. All of the analysis will be used to inform future MJPs, and the direction and ground gained in support of non-GCC PES. This work is still ongoing and is expected to roll out through to Aug-Sep 20.
In terms of the Ops Gp, this HQ is extremely well supported by those well-respected units delivering world class training to our young officers and recruits from all four corners of the country, commonwealth and across the world.
I will leave you to read through some of the fine work conducted by our Officers, Warrant Officers and SNCOs from the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, who sit under the 2* Command of HQ ARITC... esprit de corps.
11th (ROYAL SCHOOL OF SIGNALS) SIGNAL REGIMENT

11th (Royal School of Signals) Signal Regiment and the Royal Corps of Signals have had a busy twelve months with their main effort in the development and delivery of Project
CADUCEUS. Project CADUCEUS is a study to identify and understand the many challenges the Royal Signals currently face.
This transformation has also seen the remodelling of the training pipeline for Phase two trainees. Physical training delivery focuses on the main output standards over the initial training period in order to identify soldiers that require support whilst completing technical trade training in line with the Army Physical Training System (APTS) in order to deliver fit and technically competent soldiers to the Field Army.
Sport continues to go from strength to strength with the Regiment being crowned Army Champions’ in Swimming, various weight categories in Tug of War and Badminton along with an array of
Cpl Pain and the rest of the Tug of war team preparing to pull strong and be crowned Army Champions
other successes at Regional and Corps level. Not forgetting Mr Olympian WO2 (QMSI) C McMullen RAPTC who won the 400m hurdles at the European games in Turin and retained gold at the World Ultra Multi Event in Helsinki. Overall it was a strong showing from the Regiment and was encapsulated with a respectful 4th place in the Army Sports Trophy Competition (ASTC) with the intent of regaining the trophy in the next training year.
The Regiment continues to be a great platform for AAPTIs wishing to progress into the RAPTC. Under the diligent guidance of WO2 (QMSI) Richardson RAPTC and WO2 (QMSI) McMullen RAPTC over an eighteen-month period, three individuals have successfully made it through to RAPTC selection. The SIO fraternity are still embedded in the foundations of Blandford P&RTF offering their support and wisdom to the ever-changing military cohort.
