And finally, many years ago I was given
this photograph (above) which I was told is of the R101 airship flying over Islip during trials
in either late 1929 or early 1930. During the evening of 4th October 1930, R101 took off from Cardington, Bedfordshire and travelled south towards London where my mother aged
8 years watched it pass over Plaistow in the
East End of London. Early the next morning, it crashed near Beauvais in France. Only eight of the 54 people on board survived. This effectively ended airship development in Britain.
