laughter to the show. We were delighted to have Phil and his wife spend so much time talking to the public, interviews and question time answer sessions, right from the heart of gardening.
After judging from our own Allotment Challenge Jim Buttress we had to wait until the afternoon to discover if we had won anything and yes, you’ve guessed it, for the 5th year running we were delighted to be awarded a Large Gold Medal. So well done Team Southport for everyone’s commitment and support. This was a great 4 day show to raise awareness of the NAS, promote our success and also give tips and advice to the visitors. While the weather was mainly kind to us we decided to give the secretary a break this year and she survived not getting a dip in the pool on the last day; we even
had a hot tub stand near us offering the use of the hub tub.
If you missed the show then make sure you put next year’s dates in your diary: 16th – 19th Aug 2018. Come on down, visit our display and enjoy a fantastic independent show – even better if you fancy supporting us and joining in the build; let us know, we never refuse help.
This summer it has been encouraging across our region to learn of the many events, open days etc. that allotments
have held for the community in their
area. Our community are the guardians
of the future and we need to ensure that allotments remain high on the list, promoting healthy living and being at the heart of the community they serve. Be proud of all your efforts this summer and by the time you read
this perhaps you have managed to have a rest as winter approaches, ready to recharge your batteries for spring.
At the time of this article we were proud to have obtained:
Best allotment Blackpool
Large Gold Southport
Runner-up in Blackpool Green Cleaner
Champions
Still awaiting North West in Bloom awards
not until November
Best wishes and thanks to everyone in our
region for all your hard work for the allotment movement and the support you give to the NAS.

On Saturday 1st July, we
held our inaugural Proms at the Plot. The most excellent Stretford Band and their ebullient conductor served up a magni cent combination
of traditional tunes, with
an unexpected soupçon of Robbie, and a splendid nale of Jerusalem et al. There were some ancient feet,
the pastures were indeed green and pleasant, and the camera did not lie – the divine countenance was much in evidence.
Considerable ag activity was observed, many sandwiches were consumed, there was more than a suggestion of bitterly cold beer, and some lovely ladies were visiting an armadillo?!
The audience certainly played its part in the success of the event but, obviously, the band was the star – creating a superior sound, constantly impressive but consistently modest. We all extend our applause and gratitude to them.
Looking forward to next year already (7th July anyone?)...

Moss Park plotholders raise money for Trafford Carers Charity
What a fantastic day we had at our annual charity event on Sunday 4th of June at Moss Park Allotments, Lesley Road, Stretford, Manchester. We managed to raise a brilliant £400 through our cake/coffee morning, combined with a raf e and tombola for this year’s chosen local charity - Trafford Carers.
A massive thank you must go to all participating members
and helpers who unsel shly gave their time and effort to ensure everything went off without a hitch. A special thank you to all our bakers who donated such lovely and delicious cakes. Even the weather smiled on us. The sunshine certainly helped to attract such a good turnout from the public, allowing us to have a very good day on our plant sales as well.
Apart from raising a substantial amount of money for charity, it is extremely gratifying and rewarding to see how our members and friends are so willing to get involved and help in any way they can. Well done to you all!
