WINTER
A white mist shrouded the Wylder Valley with an unforgiving icy chill. Autumn was giving way to a barren winter and fading light. The trees in Barns Wood were leafless, with no welcome for the animals and birds. Thorny brambles scrambled about decaying branches and fungi. The valley was bare and ready for the first snowfall.
Charlie Rabbit, his wife, Lottie, and their four daughters, lived in a wildlife garden at the rear of Mr and Mrs Weston's cottage. Their neighbours, Alfie and Sadie Squirrel lived in a lodge, high in the conifer trees. On the opposite side of the garden were Sam and Betsy Hedgehog. They owned the Garden Hog Bakery and Hog Delicatessen, in Barns Wood.
