Through invitation by his daughter’s school, Harestock Primary located in Winchester, LCpl Russell May assembled a brass quintet for Armed Forces Day to show the children his trade. The quintet performed various animated film music to the excited children and LCpl May also took the opportunity to talk about what life as an Army Musician is like. Also taking part in the day’s activities were permanent staff from ATR(W) who created various physical activities in the school field for the children to experience – who knows, future members of the RIFLES family?
Musical support was provided for a 4 RIFLES medals parade. To present the soldiers with their medals was HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The Duchess also received the salute from SBMaj Simon Topp to conclude our Sounding Retreat which followed on shortly after the parade.
The Band and Bugles of The Rifles performed a Sounding Retreat for Royal Green Jackets Weekend at ATR(W). The annual event taking place in the blistering heat was enjoyed by the association

Her week commenced with intense training to develop skills and culminated with the various competitions. LCpl Soall finished first in the ladies waterski and fifth overall in the wakeboard competitions.

PRIDE AND ENJOYMENT WAS WRITTEN ACROSS ALL THEIR FACES
All the hard work undertaken in 2017 by Captain Tex Carlton and Colin Cranswick in forming the Band Association and making it a musical success, through band concentrations and rehearsals, came to fruition at their first band concert in Shrewsbury on the 16th of June 2018. Supported by the Buglers’ Association, the combined sound of these veteran bandsmen and buglers was truly magical. Pride and enjoyment was written across all their faces especially that of Captain Tex Carlton who was conducting. It is hoped that this will be the start of something very special for the Regiment, however they will need the support and help of all concerned
particularly for the purchase of instruments, uniforms and music. Hopefully this will be the blueprint for the future and we wish the Band Association all success in the years ahead.
Any former Light Division or Rifles bandsmen who wish to join should contact Colin Cranswick, Rifles – Light Infantry - KOYLI Regimental Association Secretary (Yorkshire)
